At Guatemala Trading Company we celebrate the flavors that define this land and few spices carry as much warmth and story as our Guatemalan Cinnamon. Known locally as “canela,” this is true Ceylon cinnamon, softer, sweeter, and more delicate than the hard sticks commonly found on supermarket shelves.
Guatemala is one of the few countries in the Western Hemisphere that grows Ceylon cinnamon. Introduced during the colonial era, it took root in the humid highlands and coastal regions where the warm sun and rich volcanic soil bring out its naturally floral and citrusy notes. The bark is carefully peeled by hand, then rolled and sun dried into the classic quills, preserving both its aroma and heritage.
Cinnamon has been used for centuries across Mesoamerica, from colonial kitchens to indigenous remedies. In Guatemala, it remains a cornerstone of daily life, infusing café con leche, arroz con leche, spiced tamales, and countless traditional desserts with its gentle heat and unmistakable sweetness.
